After he recorded his 2023 single “Lil Boo Thang,” an exuberant dance-rap party-starter that samples The Emotions’ 1977 disco-soul classic “Best Of My Love,” Paul Russell kept hearing the same thing from people: “I haven’t heard anything new that makes me this happy!”
As Russell explains on the latest episode of Verified, he was inspired to write “Lil Boo Thang” after hearing “Best of My Love” and vibing with the track’s signature horn riff. He wound up sampling the instrumental and later writing lyrics to go along with the upbeat music. The finished product has now earned him more than 44 million Spotify plays.
