Danny Brown returns today with Quaranta, his sixth solo studio album and first since 2019’s uknowhatimsayin¿ The Detroit rapper finished the LP some three years ago, when he was at “rock bottom” and reeling from substance abuse, according to a recent Guardian profile. (He’s since been to rehab.) The album has been described as a “spiritual bookend” to 2011’s XXX, which Brown released when he was 30. (“Quaranta” means “40” in Italian.”)
Quaranta features the previously released singles “Tantor” and “Jenn’s Terrific Vacation,” the latter of which arrived earlier this week with a set of lyrics about gentrification in Brown’s hometown. “Jenn’s Terrific Vacation” features drummer, producer, and rapper Kassa Overall, one of three credited guests on the album. Detroit MC Bruiser Wolf turns up on “Y.B.P.,” and rapper-producer MIKE appears on “Celibate.”
The 11-song collection follows SCARING THE HOES, Brown’s joint album with JPEGMAFIA that dropped back in May.
