Singer-songwriter Yaya Bey returns today with her new album Ten Fold, the follow-up to 2022’s Remember Your North Star. While the album was influenced by the 2022 death of Bey’s father, the rapper Grand Daddy I.U., whose voice can be heart on the new track “so fantastic,” Yaya says she’s in a better place than she was last year.
“I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone,” she told Pitchfork. “I have what I need. Everything I’m doing right now is to satiate my genuine urges, but it’s not coming from a place of lack. When I made North Star, I was in despair. And even though I was grieving when I made Ten Fold—I’m still grieving—I’m not in despair. I have more of a willingness to surrender to the seasons of my life.”
Ten Fold includes the previously released tracks “me and all my niggas,” “chasing the bus,” “sir princess bad bitch,” “the evidence,” and “crying through my teeth.”
