Teddy broke down the meaning in an episode of ‘Verified.’

Teddy Swims is making history on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Lose Control.” This week, the singer-songwriter earns his first No. 1 on the coveted chart after 32 weeks, capping the longest run to the top spot by a male solo artist, according to Billboard. Earlier this year, Swims spoke with Genius about why the song is so special to him.

“To be able to get to share my pain with someone, it makes my pain very necessary,” he said on Verified. “It makes it okay that I had it. It made me feel not alone, and it made me realize that I helped somebody else not feel alone. Isn’t that just the function of music? We did a damn good job with this one. That’s for damn sure.”

“Lose Control” features an infectious chorus that’s no doubt helped the song land at the top of the charts, but Teddy says he approached every song section with a hook-ready mentality.

“With 100,000 songs coming out today, you have maybe two and a half minutes, at best, to grab somebody’s attention,” he said. “I think it’s very important to make everything feel like a hook all the time.”
