Diluvium

Coin Locker Kid

About “Diluvium”

Diluvium is Devyn Smith’s 2016 album under his artistic alias “Coin locker kid.” The title is a combination of the words diluvian (a water-creature) and delirium.

One could view the preceding album The Salmon of Doubt as a honeymoon album, and this as the moving-in album, especially since the end features lyrics about moving furniture into a house.

One way to look at this album is about shedding oneself. Devyn moves in with Mandy, and it follows that as they share a life together they must also learn to share one another’s lives. Devyn takes up Mandy’s darkness, and she takes up his.

Therein are ideas of coexisting, moving between realities, darkness in consciousness, and what it means to be human.

The album was taken down towards the end of 2016 but then re-released on his Bandcamp page in 2018 with the following description (for context, Melymbrosia is also a piece of art about venturing to sea):

“At her age she understood better than the pair themselves the immense seriousness of what had happened.” –Virginia Woolfe, “Melymbrosia”
