About “Empath”

Empath is the 18th studio album of Canadian metal musician Devin Townsend. Released on March 29, 2019 on his own HevyDevy Records label alongside Inside Out Music, it is his first solo release (ie, not affiliated with projects such as Devin Townsend Project and The Devin Townsend Band) since 2007’s Ziltoid the Omniscient and possibly the first release to not be a concept album since 2006’s The Hummer.

An official statement about the album was posted on Devin’s Facebook page and stated the following:

On this album, Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.

Three music videos were produced for the album leading up to release: one for “Genesis”, one for “Evermore”, and one for “Spirits Will Collide”. One was produced after the album’s release, that being the video for “Why?”.
