About “Fallen”

Fallen is the debut studio album by Evanescence, released on 4 March 2003 through Wind-up Records.

Frontwoman Amy Lee stated:

We’ve all fallen, but at the same time we’re not broken. There is the hint that we are going to get up again.

The songs deal with “longing, sadness, solitude, anger, and pain” as pointed out by Amy Lee in a Rock Sound interview. Some of the songs were written when Amy and Ben were 15 years old, with “Whisper”, “Imaginary” and “My Immortal” appearing in their early EPs in the ‘90s. Half of the album was written during artist development for two years after the band was signed by Wind-up in 2001.

Amy told on Evanescence’s bio on their website in early 2003:

The point of this whole record and band is to let people know that they’re not alone in dealing with bad feelings or pain or anything that they go through. That’s life and that’s human. They’re not alone, and we’re going through it, too.

The album has sold over 17 million copies worldwide and contains hits like “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal”.

For its 10th anniversary, the band released a limited edition purple vinyl version of Fallen.
The album includes three B-sides: “Farther Away”, “Missing”, and “Breathe No More”.

For its 20th anniversary, a remastered edition with bonus material was released on November 17, 2023.

“Fallen” Q&A

  • Are there any songs that were cut from the album?

Yes, some were released as a bonus track on international editions of Fallen, a B-side on single CD, or soundtracks.

    • “Farther Away” was released on the album’s Japanese editions, as well as a B-side on “Bring Me to Life” single. The latter also included “Missing.”

    • “Breathe No More” was released on the Elektra OST in 2005, but it was performed live during the Fallen tour.

    • “My Immortal (Band Version)” didn’t make it into the final cut because the band’s label, Wind-Up, was not satisfied with this version. They preferred the Origin version, which is a demo version, but with added strings. The band fought over their decision, but finally gave in. Eventually, the band version was used on the music video and later included as a bonus track on Fallen’s rerelease in 2004.

  • What have the artists said about the album cover?

    Amy Lee:

It’s just so intertwined throughout the fabric of my life, our time onstage, so much. I see the cover and I guess I think of myself as a kid. It’s a kind of innocent picture of the beginning. Things happened for us pretty young, pretty early, when we were still kind of hammering it out. It’s definitely a different picture, but it’s still my heart. So it’s a beautiful thing.

  • What was the recording process like for the album?

I remember being emotional and so excited when we got to fly to Seattle and record the orchestration. David Campbell did the strings for all of our albums. It’s more than strings. And it was just such a beautiful thing that I’ve always dreamed of coming to life. Because from the beginning of the vision, of the idea for this band, for me, a big part of it had to be like a film score. And in my mind, you couldn’t do that right without it being real. Keyboards didn’t cut it for me, and it was something that I really, really dug my heels in about. I was like, “It has to be real strings. Please let us do real strings — we’re worth it. We’ll pay you back…somehow! Believe in us.” And we were just so lucky to have it be David Campbell because he’s a genius. So to sit in a room and hear it all pop into amazing technicolor with him and watch it happen by this professional team of musicians was amazing. That was a moment when I just had tears streaming down my face, [I was] so happy.
