The penultimate record of the Peter Gabriel-led lineup is widely considered a high watermark in the Genesis canon. A pun-filled meditation on contemporary British identity, it features some of the band’s most famous songs, including their first hit “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe),” the virtuosic “Firth of Fifth,” and the epic “The Cinema Show.” Phil Collins gets an early lead vocal credit on “More Fool Me,” foreshadowing his soon to be role of lead singer three years later.
It was accompanied by a successful tour which featured more characters and costumes from Peter Gabriel. The more unified concept of the album gave some clues as to the next steps in the Genesis discography.
