About “Diaspora”

Diaspora is GoldLink’s debut studio album. The album boasts features from Khalid, Pusha-T, Tyler, The Creator, and more. In a June 2019 interview with Wonderland Magazine, GoldLink stated that March 2017’s At What Cost is now considered his “breakout mixtape” rather than his debut album, due to a mutual agreement with his record label, RCA:

What people don’t know is that At What Cost was my breakout mixtape, according to label agreement. So the next thing will actually be my debut album. And for those who want to still consider this next one as my sophomore album, I’ll also be very glad to hold that title as well!

The word diaspora is defined as “the dispersion of any people from their original homeland.” On this record, GoldLink embraces many African themes, such as war cries and musical styles, representing the “diaspora” of African music.

The album’s lead single, “Zulu Screams,” arrived on May 13, 2019. GoldLink announced the album and its artwork on May 30, 2019. On the following day, he released its second single, “Joke Ting.” The final pre-release single, “U Say,” was released on June 6. He revealed the tracklist hours before its release.

“Diaspora” Q&A

  • What has GoldLink said about the album?

In an interview with Spotify, GoldLink said this on the album:

Diaspora was inspired by universal blackness. My inspirations have changed drastically, naturally because I was able to be exposed to more globally. D.C. is still the root of all my success as far as perspective, but I wanted to create a bridge between cultures around the world. It’s important because we’re 6-8 generations removed from where we started from. It’s about time we turn around and bridge that gap before it becomes 15-17 generations removed, and we have to do the work of interconnectivity before it’s too late
