About “Guy”

Guy is the 1988 eponymous debut studio album by New York-based R&B group Guy, released under Uptown Records a year after signing to the label.

Guy peaked at #27 on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for 5 weeks. The album is also certified 2x Platinum and ranked 34 on Billboard’s Year-End chart for 1989. The album was re-released under Geffen Records as a double-disc album in 2007 to celebrate its 20th anniversary with remastered songs and remixes.

In an April 2012 interview with Soul Culture, member Teddy Riley revealed that the album was initially recorded in his mother’s house, stating:

Everything you hear on that album was developed in my mother’s house. My witnesses are my mother and the lady upstairs named Ms. Black, who used to bang on the pipes telling me to turn my music down.

Guy spawned 5 singles, “‘Round and 'Round (Merry Go 'Round of Love)”, “Groove Me,” “Teddy’s Jam,” “I Like,” and “Spend the Night.” All singles were Top 40 hits in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart, with “I Like” peaking at #2. “I Like” was also the only single to chart in the Hot 100 chart, peaking at #70.
