Why Make Sense?

Where can Hot Chip go that they haven’t before? Each of their previous records has seen the band evolve, from their humble roots on Coming On Strong to the maximalist electronica of In Our Heads. Why Make Sense? is almost like a greatest hits, as Hot Chip fuse all the sounds and influences that comprise their back catalogue and create a new piece of music to best represent themselves.

Single “Huarache Lights” is the perfect example. Rather than turn the volume knob up to 12, they dial it down and settle in to a lovely groove, which is similar to their earlier work.

Alexis Taylor’s lyrics are even more heartfelt than before, as the influence of his solo work bleeds into Hot Chip. “Need You Now” is filled with devastation and emotion, and “White Wine and Fried Chicken” is a simple yet intimate invitation into his romantic world.

The album was well received, and managed to chart worldwide, peaking at number 3 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and number 13 in the UK.
