The Remedy

Jagged Edge

About “The Remedy”

The Remedy is Jagged Edge’s seventh album, arriving 4 years after their previous effort, September 2007’s Baby Makin' Project. The group’s extended hiatus between projects was due to contractual issues in signing with Slip-n-Slide Records, after departing from Def Jam in 2009.

The Remedy marks the group’s first release without the backing of a major record label; released under Slip-n-Slide Records and their own Five 81 Records imprint. Speaking to Billboard in June 2011 about shifting labels again, Brian said:

Nothing against Jermaine [Dupri], but we had done that for so long. We just welcomed the chance to see what else we could try.

The Remedy debuted and peaked at #35 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 12,400 units during its first week in the States. The album spawned four singles: “Lay You Down,” “Baby,” “Flow Thru My Veins,” and “Love on You.”

The album is only available on American streaming sites and its songs and music videos on YouTube are limited to the American audience.

“The Remedy” Q&A

  • How did the album chart?

The Remedy peaked at #35 on the Billboard 200 chart the week of July 9, 2011. it also peaked at #7 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

  • What have Jagged Edge said about the group's 4-year hiatus?

Speaking to Billboard in June 2011, the group said:

This actual break has been more contractual, business situations that need to be handled and dotting all the I’s and crossing the T’s. I want the fans to know that any time when they can’t reach us, it ain’t us. It’s politics, it’s the powers that be.

I just want everyone to understand that. We love them and we’re going to keep trying to get it to them, but just understand it ain’t easy.

  • How do Jagged Edge compare this album to their previous efforts?

Speaking to You Know I Got Soul in June 2011, the group said:

Comparing this to our previous music, basically it’s vintage Jagged Edge BUT there are some differences. We’ve got some new features on there, we went with some different producers on the new album outside of what we’ve done in the past and we’re also touching on some different topics. We’re really big on relationships and topics so at the end of the day we’re going to hit you with all realms of the relationship and just things that go on in a relationship. Things that you want to go on, things that you’ve experienced with the one you love or the one you have loved.

  • What did Jagged Edge say about signing with Slip-n-Slide Records?

Speaking to You Know I Got Soul in June 2011, the group said:

For us it’s just when we left the Def Jam situation, we were heavily looking and threw our name in the ring and let people know we were looking for a new situation. Of the people who reached out, we didn’t feel like anybody was more energized and interested than Ted Lucas. I mean, Ted Lucas basically came to us and professed how much of a fan he was, how much he loved the music and how much he wanted to see us do our thing. A lot of other places were offering good situations but they wanted to control more of it and we’ve always been big on having as much of a hand on it as we can have. Even if that means we are in a new relationship where it takes a little longer or takes more of a fight, that’s fine, we’ve been fighting our whole career and we’re not against fighting to make it happen. So when you’ve got people like Ted Lucas who has accomplished the things he’s accomplished show that type of love and interest, to us it seemed like a real genuine want for us to succeed and see us where in his mind we belong. We couldn’t turn our backs on that.

  • How did Jagged Edge describe the album's sound?

A June 2009 Billboard article quotes the group saying:

What we want to do with this album is still be on that R&B tip, but with the help of a few hand-picked features. So far we’re in talks with Rick Ross and Plies. We talked to Jay-Z about doing a song on the last album, so we’re going to try to pursue that again, and we’ve also been chatting with Snoop [Dogg].

I think no matter what we do, our goal is always to sing the hell out of a song. When that is the goal, that will lead to the bedroom anyway. Topic wise we are all over on this one – some sound more youthful, some more suggestive and some sound real classic, like the big ballads. If you look in the past, the ratio of power ballads was grossly outnumbered, but this album will be more balanced.
