Janet Jackson’s self-titled debut album was released on September 21, 1982, via A&M Records when she was only sixteen years old.

While Jackson had initial desires to be a horse racing jockey or an entertainment lawyer, her father, Joe Jackson, steered her into a music career.

While the album received mixed reviews, it reached #63 on the Billboard 200 album chart and its debut single, “Young Love,” peaked at #64 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Since the release of her debut, Ms. Jackson has sold over 160 million records, has had the most consecutive top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 of any female artist, and won five Grammy awards.
