Theme for a Broken Soul

About “Theme for a Broken Soul”

Theme For A Broken Soul is an electronic and house album inspired by and dedicated to the short-lived “broken beat” scene that derived from West London. Madlib, having listened to the broken beat sound at London’s Co-op Club, undertook the moniker of DJ Rels, and with it, diverged from his more traditional production of hip-hop and jazz to provided listeners with his interpretation of the broken beat genre.

Upon the release of the album, Stones Throw presented DJ Rels as a new, talented and unknown producer, however, similarly to Quasimoto, the charade was shortly lived when audiences began to figure-out the artist’s true identity. To further the charade, Stones Throw credited DJ Rels as the album’s producer as well as credited D. Relmond (who DJ Rels name stems from) as the writer and performer.

The 12” single, Diggin in Brownswood, released a year prior to the album’s release.

A 2-LP version of the album was released; however, the vinyl is now out of print for the manufacturer and distributor of the album, Goya, has since been discontinued.
