One Word Extinguisher

Prefuse 73

About “One Word Extinguisher”

Prefuse’s follow-up to the influential Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives may not be as glossy or refined of a project as the former (Though considering the glitchy production, scratchy samples and layers upon layers of synths Scott has since become known for, this could be seen as an improvement), but it packs the emotional punch missing from those prior cuts.

In a 2003 interview Scott laments the time it took to piece together One Word Extinguisher, as well as the effect it had on him during production, though it should be apparent in the visceral nature of a track like “Plastic” or the sombreness of the wailing synths found in “Storm Returns” that the emotional range was certainly done a service by this longer production cycle.

Though seemingly not underperfoming critically or commercially, history seems to have conspired to forget One Word Extinguisher when reflecting on Prefuse’s studio work, which is a shame as there’s surely a place in Hip-Hop for a record as unique as this.
