After a six year hiatus following 2017’s Villains, a gap that included a world-wide pandemic as well as ups and downs among the band members' personal lives, QOTSA returned in 2023 with In Times New Roman….
In what appeared to be a signal that this album was the third piece of a loose trilogy, the album’s title ends in ellipses, just as 2013’s …Like Clockwork title began with. This was later confirmed by Josh.

Is this album part of a trilogy?
In an interview with the German publication Visions in May of 2023, Josh said:
I have a great affinity with the number three, it’s magical to me. In Times New Roman… is the final album in a cycle of three discs: the first to find something to express yourself, the second to expand your means of expression, and the third to summarize what you’ve learned along the way. I try to do these three steps again and again. Lullabies To Paralyze and Era Vulgaris were unsuccessful attempts to start a new cycle. And now I’ve managed to complete a cycle again: In Times New Roman… Villains come …Like Clockwork.

Why is the tone of this album so "raw" and "brutal"?
In an interview with the German publication Visions in May of 2023, Josh said:
Well, this record came about in a very different way than its predecessors. In between I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to make another album. Crucial to an album is that you stock up on the things you need to make it. It’s less about choosing what to leave behind and more about what’s really necessary. It’s like camping: You only take the things with you that are really essential. […] In my way, this time I wanted to make an album that’s just as raw and brutal. Ideally, you’ll listen to the record a few times and then tell a friend of yours, “Hey, have you heard the new Queens yet? It’s brutal.“ Starting with the first note, this album should radiate something brutal in its tonality.
