Unlimited Love

Red Hot Chili Peppers

About “Unlimited Love”

Unlimited Love is Red Hot Chili Peppers' twelfth studio album, released on April 1, 2022 and coming six years after their previous full-length effort, The Getaway.

The record also marks the return of two key figures in the band’s history: guitarist John Frusciante, who re-joined RHCP in 2019 and scores his first contributions since the band’s 2006 LP Stadium Arcadium, and long-time producer Rick Rubin, who returned to work with the group after a whopping eleven years (since I’m With You came out in 2011).

RHCP started recording and working on the album in 2021, at Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in Malibu: a initial selection of around 100 tracks was trimmed down to slightly less than 50 recorded songs, 17 of which would eventually make the cut for the album’s final tracklist, while “Nerve Flip” would be the bonus track added to the Japanese Import of the album.

The lead single and opener from the album, “Black Summer,” was released on February 4, 2022, together with its own official music video and the official announcement of Unlimited Love.

On March 4, 2022, RHCP had released the album’s second song, a five-minute song heavily influenced by funk and jazz titled “Poster Child,” releasing its official music video just two days later.

On March 24, 2022, eight days before the album’s release date, the band released the fourth track, “Not the One.”

In the press release that announced the album, RHCP made the following statement:

Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could.

  • What have the artists said about the album?

Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.

We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album UNLIMITED LOVE, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it.

When we got together to start writing material, we began by playing old songs by people like Johnny “Guitar” Watson, The Kinks, New York Dolls, Richie Barrett and others. Ever so gradually, we started bringing in new ideas, and turning jams into songs, and after a couple of months the new stuff was all we were playing. The feeling of effortless fun we had when we were playing songs by other people, stayed with us the whole time we were writing. For me, this record represents our love for, and faith in each other.

  • What have the artists said about the album?

    Anthony Kiedis:

One more time, for whatever reason, the universe saw fit to inject this band with another giant shot of plasma. Left to our own devices, we probably would’ve withered on the vine somewhere along the line, as we all do at some point. But it wasn’t quite time for us to do that yet.

It’s so clear when he [John Frusciante] writes and when he plays. It’s really fun to listen to because it’s sound and emotion and colour. He’s not trying to play the right notes—he’s just trying to play the notes that are truly him.

We’re older and different, and enter Unlimited Love, a really fun and wild experience. We accept each other and we love each other and there is an endless friendship going on there—which is not to say that we want to hang out every day. It’s nice to go away from it and come back to it, go away from it and come back. But it never dies.
