Shake Shook Shaken

The Dø

About “Shake Shook Shaken”

Shake, Shook, Shaken is the third album by French-Finnish indie-pop duo, The Dø.

The album was conceived during the tours of The Dø around 2012-13 and was written during the break-up time of the two, after 8-9 years of intense music production.

The duo couldn’t carry all the analogous instruments along with them all the time during the tours, so they started caring about lighter instruments in the times of “artistic emergency”: synths, drum machines and laptop beats. Hence giving the duo their straightforward and bright pop sound.

Album artwork contains Olivia and Dan being handcuffed to each other, while Olivia wearing orange overalls, mostly resembling prison clothing. In the music video of “The Despair, Hangover & Ecstasy”, the two can be seen wearing the same clothing, while the handcuffs are broken from the chains, thus -probably- implying the break-up.

Olivia Merilahti, the duos voice and also the writer of the “surreal poems” -the lyrics- describes the album with:

In Finland, there is ‘sisu’, a sense of resilience and bravery that is a common, ancestral value to the Finns. Whatever happens, we don’t let go, we keep moving on. This followed us while writing the album. My lyrics are more or less surreal poems, on this record I talk a lot about finding oneself in chaos and knowing how to live with it.

The album was released around the world gradually, starting with singles in France in the late-2014 to early-2015.

The album got Rock Album of the Year award at the Victoires de la Musique in February 2015.

Bonus: There is also a concert version of the album, Live at l’Olympia, Paris. the concert version is highly acclaimed and some songs are stated online as “better than the album version”.
