About “A Very Spidey Christmas - EP”

In the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Peter Parker/Spider-Man (voiced by Chris Pine) teases that he made a Christmas album with an album video teaser and partial tracklist. “Spidey Bells (A Hero’s Lament)” is the only song to have been listed in the film and be produced, performed by Chris Pine who provided the voice for a different version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the film. The other four songs were officially announced on December 20, 2018, the day before the EP’s official release. They feature Chris Pine (who voices Peter Parker), Jake Johnson (who voices Peter B. Parker), and Shameik Moore (who voices Miles Morales), each singing classic Christmas songs with new lyrics written from the perspective of the respective Spider-Men they portray in the movie. There is also a spoken word track performed as Spider-Man by Jorma Taccone, who voices Green Goblin in the film.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are known to have created full songs from their films with their casts with songs like “Everything Is Awesome!!!” with Tegan and Sara and The Lonely Island and “Untitled Self Portrait” with Will Arnett from The Lego Movie (2014).

“A Very Spidey Christmas - EP” Q&A

  • How did this EP come about?

While the film’s directors and producers were working on the score in London, they had an idea to record a holiday song and asked Chris Pine if he could sing. Impressed by Pine’s singing, they decided to expand the joke into a holiday album. (Source: Vanity Fair)

  • What are the other songs that were teased in the movie?

In the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a joke is made about Spider-Man having made a Christmas album after his prime Spider-Man time is over. The following tracklist contains the songs that were teased in the film:

    • Spidey, It’s Cold Outside
    • Swingin' Around The Mistletoe
    • Silent Night (You’re Welcome)
    • Joy to the World (That I Just Saved)
    • Spidey the Snowman
    • It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like a Non-Denominational Holiday
    • Ave Maria

The only song from this tracklist to have actually been recorded and produced is “Joy to the World,” even though it doesn’t feature the “(That I Just Saved)” joke at the end of its title. However, the joke is preserved in the song’s lyrics.
