It was a highly regarded soundtrack, becoming the first (and so far, only) animated film soundtrack to receive an Album of the Year Grammy nomination.
The movie itself was just as highly regarded, not only becoming the first animated film to win a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Film, but also the first animated film to be nominated Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Alan Menken would win 2 Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for title song.
The movie was dedicated to lyricist Howard Ashman, who had died of AIDS during the making of the film. In the end credits, an epitaph for Howard reads:
