This 1943 musical film was one of the few movies of its time that was pitched at entertaining a mass audience and had an entirely African-American cast, telling the story of an ordinary man (Eddie “Rochester” Anderson) caught between a virtuous wife (Ethel Waters) and a seductive temptress (Lena Horne). Despite the caliber of performers, the backing of a major studio (MGM), and a prominent director (Vincente Minnelli), the film was only a modest success because many movie theaters in the southern United States refused to show it.
