About “Dreams”

Dreams is a multi-faceted art project by Stadiums and Shrines featuring contributions from various artists including Yumi Zouma, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and Julie Byrne, among many others. The project, launched in 2011, challenges artists to create music from a collage of images from the past. Each collage is made up of images from one country, taken from a 1950s tourism book called Around The World In 1,000 Pictures. According to creator Dan Sutton, the “idea was to pair them with writing, and from there we figured out that this project could open up to audio, and that we should invite musicians to take part.”
The picture collages are accompanied by both music and word. The words, written after each song is finished, “look for connections meant to compliment their lyrics.”
Stadiums and Shrines spoke to Fader about the meaning behind the project:

We consider it a conversation between dreams, kind of co-dreaming, a collaborative dream. The chain of production is direct, but by the time a piece if finished, the logic is interconnected in strange ways. An uncanny world is assembled by bridging across these mediums.
