About “Lazarus (Original Cast Recording)”

As stated in the Lazarus booklet:

Decades after creating the role of Thomas Newton in Nicholas Roeg’s 1976 film, The Man Who Fell to Earth, David Bowie approached producer Robert Fox in the Summer of 2013 with the idea of revisiting the character in an new theatrical work. With this seed of an idea and after considering many young talented writers, Bowie accepted Fox’s suggestion to approach playwright Enda Walsh. A collaboration began and Bowie offered his musical catalog for the project. An early version of Lazarus took shape and Fox and Walsh suggested that director Ivo van Hove be added to the creative team. The collaborators came together for a workshop in late 2014 where it became apparent that New York Theater Workshop was a natural fit for the world premiere production. The entire run was sold out in a matter of minutes. The Lazarus team was delighted to be received with open arms and rehearsals began in October 2015. The recording of the cast album was immediately scheduled for January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to hear the devastating news that David Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.
