This musical is unusual for its time in that it has music by multiple songwriters. Its plot about a European princess who comes to America incognito and falls in love with a U.S. Army lieutenant required songs in both a European and American vein, so Sigmund Romberg wrote some of the music while George and Ira Gershwin wrote some, and P.G. Wodehouse contributed as lyricist. It is the Gershwin songs that have survived the ravages of history. The show premiered on Broadway in January 1928.
