About “The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition”

The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition is a reissue of the original 2015 cover album, collectively titled as The Purple Album by British hard rock band Whitesnake. Originally released on 29 April 2015 in Japan, 15 May in Europe, 18 May in the UK and 19 May 2015 in the US via Frontiers Records, the album sparked mixed reactions from altogether polarized critics, especially with the public. Coverdale responded to the criticism since then, eventually forcing him to continue with the band. It contains several covers of Deep Purple songs, particularly those where David Coverdale was the singer back then.

On its original release, it charted at #18 in the UK, #8 in Japan, and #87 in the US, with copies seeking around 6,900 units in its first week of release.

On 24 August 2023, David Coverdale announced the re-issue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Coverdale joining Deep Purple released on 13 October 2023 via Rhino Entertainment. The reissue contained remixes and a new remix of particular cover songs recorded from 2018 The Purple Tour. The set would also include David Coverdale’s 1972 audition tape for Deep Purple and “Ideas for DP’s 1974 Stormbringer album."
