The Merry Wives of Windsor

William Shakespeare

About “The Merry Wives of Windsor”

Published in 1602 but thought to have been written at least five years earlier, The Merry Wives of Windsor is one of Shakespeare’s slighter and less frequently performed comedies. Set during the reign of Henry IV and featuring many of the same characters as Shakespeare’s “Henriad,” the play is said to have been prompted by Queen Elizabeth’s request to see Sir John Falstaff in love.
