Jay-Z mentioned Nas on EVERY SINGLE ALBUM he ever released, at least up to even the Black Album. Either by sampling his songs, mentioning him or his group by name, using one of his lines, dissing him, etc. Even during the beef said illmatic was hot.
Nas’s baby mama Carmen, who also dated Jay-Z, once stated that Hov was obsessed with Nas. She said Jay had a huge vinyl collection of rare Nas records in his Manhattan apartment.
Other things she claimed in her book It’s No Secret: From Nas to Jay-Z, from Seduction to Scandal:
- From 1996 up to their battle in 2001, Jay Z had name dropped Nas over 10 times in his songs, Nas felt Jay Z had an unhealthy borderline obsession with him.
- Jay used to call Nas' phone when and leave messages like “Yo son, what’s up it’s me, uh me and Premo are doin a track right now, and uh there’s 16 bars open you wanna drop a verse…”
- when she was with Jay he’d ask her weird questions about her and Nas, like what positions Nas liked to hit, and weird stuff… she said Jay-Z was obsessed with Nas.
A Phony could refer to his demenour in “Sunshine” that a lot of people see as one of his worst songs.
A fake could either refer to that he makes up lines and doesn´t live them – fireing back to Jays accusation. Or that he really liked him, he was a big fan and therefore shouldnt disrespect Nas.

Also a reference to the previous line. Ultraviolet and radio are both types of wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum.
I would also like to add that this is a cool play on the meaning of radio waves and ultraviolet waves. Ultraviolet waves have a very small wavelength, and thus are known to have a lot of energy (so he’s ultraviolent) whereas he’s saying his ways are now radio waves which have a very long wavelength but low energy implying that now he’s gotten big and also is able to chill out with his music.
