Eddard Stark: Where did you hear this?
Arya Stark: In the dungeons, near the dragon skulls.
Eddard Stark: What were you doing in the dungeons?
Arya Stark: Chasing a cat.
The Wolf and The Lion by Game of Thrones

Though the warning isn’t heeded, Syrio and Arya’s “dancing lessons” are paying off in more than one way. To develop her quickness, Arya was instructed to try and catch a cat. She’s referring to the conversation she overheard between Illyrio and Varys.

Varys: Disturbing news from far away. Haven't you heard? The Wolf and The Lion by Game of Thrones

With this final blow, their verbal attack is over, Varys the victor. Both men are crafty, both men are shady, both men are intelligent. Their motives aren’t necessarily clear, but regardless, they get shit done. They go back and forth a bit in this conversation and just as Baelish thinks he has the upper hand by telling Varys that he saw him speaking to Illyrio, thinking that a conspiracy with someone across the Narrow Sea was an act of treason, Renly interrupts with news that the King is coming to the small council meeting. Varys then reveals that there’s “disturbing news from far away”. Far away being across the Narrow Sea, which means that there is a perfectly good explanation as to why Varys would be talking to Illyrio. Don’t forget that his position on the small council is “Master of Whispers.”

In case you didn’t want to read what that news was, it’s that Daenerys Targaryen is now pregnant. Although, you should probably read the discussion about her fate as it carries some great weight throughout the show.

Eddard Stark: If Ser Hugh poisoned him, who paid Ser Hugh?
Varys: Someone who could afford it.
The Wolf and The Lion by Game of Thrones

The choice is fairly obvious. There is no family richer in Westeros than the Lannisters. Two common phrases of theirs are “A Lannister always pays their debts” and “Rich as a Lannister” and remember, the kingdom is in debt for three million to papa Tywin Lannister. Both of these Lannister phrases come in handy in the following episode for Tyrion. But lets not forget, people can save money and buy things!

He enters a tent where Ser Hugh (deceased) is being tended to, he enters to speak with Barristan.

Eddard Stark: Does Ser Hugh have any family in the capital?
Barristan Selmy: No. I stood vigil for him myself last night. He had no one else.
The Wolf and The Lion by Game of Thrones

Barristan demonstrates why is an honorable man, besides being the best warrior and being Lord Commander of the Kingsguard despite who the king is. Barristan is implied to be a religious man, or at least respective of Ser Hugh’s beliefs as he says he stood watch over the corpse and in remembrance.

He is sitting, shirtless, with Loras Tyrell kneeling beside him shaving his chest. The Wolf and The Lion by Game of Thrones

Oh, that makes sense now… The two have a homosexual relationship, which is considered a sin in the Faith of the Seven. There is technically no law against same sex partners, but frowned upon due to religious reasons. Tywin has something to say on the matter down the road.
