Throughout the song Blu has referred to Earth as hell. However, he chooses to maintain a optimistic outlook say he simply hasn’t reached heaven yet.
You can’t go to heaven without living a worldly life first, which Blu refers to as hell.
More accurately, I feel like this refers more to Dante’s Inferno, where the narrator, Dante, travels through all the levels of hell. Throughout the Inferno, Dante is a living soul going through hell to reach the heavens. Similarly, all men have to do the same.
He had to learn the ways of the world through firsthand experience, not from someone else’s advice.
Why try to be someone you’re not? You can’t fool God.
The current generation is full of narcissistic, self-centered people
Blu is saying that you should do better than your peers, but even if you don’t make it to heaven, at least you’ll be amongst the people you didn’t want to be better than.
This is also a reference to Gang Starr song “Above the Clouds”
