‘His Vices’ include marijuana/tobacco, unhealthy food, and an all-around reckless lifestyle. A “poe man’s dream” would be to live like this.

Most subtle lyrics ever, they are initially sung and spoken as just the relaxing and great way of living but as song proceeds you see the recklessness of this behavior. One way to catch is to know that kendrick does not smoke so it provides a hint as to the context of what “good” really means

This song samples the collaboration song by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson off of the album, “Winter In America”. The song samples a part from the opening piece, “Peace Go With You, Brother”

King of Diamonds is located in Miami, FL, and is one of the largest, and most luxurious, strip clubs in America.

Kendrick mentioned the “King of Diamonds” again later in his career on To Pimp A Butterfly’s “Institutionalized” and also shares initials (K.D) with the King of Diamonds.

Note the way Kendrick says “ask” sounds a lot like “axe”, referencing the king of diamonds playing card.

The introduction to the album establishes a fireside scene with a community leader or authority figure beckoning people forward. It is reminiscent of a church service as a preacher calls upon the faithful.

The opening monologue can also be viewed as a sort of “Chapter One,” as the skit continues in the album’s similarly titled interludes, “Chapter Six” and “Chapter Ten.”

The skit also introduces listeners to Keisha and Tammy, whose stories continue in “Keisha’s Song (Her Pain)” and “Tammy’s Song (Her Evils)” respectively.

It should also be noted that the man speaking in the intro is actually Kendrick with his voice pitched down.

“Pistol” Pete Maravich was a point guard for the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Jazz. He is known as one of the best (and most creative) ball handlers and passers in NBA history.

These women have been in negative relationships, and they began wondering what it would be like to “turn dyke,” or become lesbian. With their stories quite similar, they find comfort in sexual relationships with one another.

Kendrick implies wordplay with “helping hand,” since hand job is common with lesbians, and he can be heard laughing.

The narrator’s love interest notices that her man is acting suspicious, so she checks his phone only to find the name of another woman. Since he “pleads the fifth,” she decides to cheat too. Interestingly, she had a guy on speed dial the whole time, implying that she’s not so innocent either.

Kendrick also implies some wordplay, since Erykah Badu—whose real name is Erica Wright—has a song called “Tyrone.”

Interestingly, Kendrick talks about his cousin Tyrone in “The Blacker The Berry”:

I’m black as the name of Tyrone and Darius

Supposedly, this stems from an actual feud between Tyrone Lamar and Dareious Hashaway, a.k.a Lil Flirty. He dissed Tyrone later, in a song posted to YouTube on June 12, 2016. Tyrone responded with a diss track of his own, posted to YouTube on July 6.
