Like everyone, first I was a fan, then I was living it. Still am, both.

I see and hear what’s being said about a lot a the new artists, especially those branching out from the traditions.

In fact, these days, everyone gets dissed for everything. (Only reason Frank Ocean gets to slide is neo-liberalism: instead of trying to get comfortable with difference, and afraid of being labeled politically incorrect, we proclaim support and understanding in public, with our assumptions, fears and prejudices at home.)

I try to avoid speaking about my peers.

I support creativity and honor artistic bravery.

Nevertheless, on behalf of the culture, and in the context of ensuring that WE write OUR history, there is DEFINITELY reason to be skeptical. There are a million ways to record music in the Internets age – and that’s a blessing and a curse.

Although the old man and I don’t do too well with each other these days, I DID have him growing up, and that’s a damn luxury, at least in America. He used to get up early with me – letting my mom (RIP) sleep – every day, AND GET INVOLVED in whatever kid shit I was into. He-Man, G.I. Joe, Matchbox cars, Lincoln logs, baseball cards, all that.

Pain (if not everything) is relative, and that’s a major component of my personal philosophy.

I FEEL my pain; I REALLY feel the pain in the world (not exclusive to humans); and I REALLY REALLY feel the pain of my loved ones.

My mom died of (metastasized breast) cancer January 2, 2012 (this year). Her sister and brother both have cancer. Her husband, my father, has cancer.
