The love of this woman broke down Justin’s defenses (his walls). As he fell deeper in love, he felt rawer and more vulnerable than ever

Now his walls are back up, and he feels nothing. He wonders if he should have ever let his guard down in the first place.

This is a real meme. Obsession with getting to the bottom of things is a major part of Tom’s intellectual makeup. I on the other hand despise deliberation as soon as I start to suspect it’s going nowhere, which is often. I tend to think a lot of issues are turtles all the way down and deliberation is often resistance to making up one’s mind.

This is one of the root conflicts between our personalities that makes our partnership difficult and also fruitful.

Despite the title and the tune, Springsteen warns us right off the bat: this isn’t going to be a happy, simple, patriotic song.

He’s not just born in a dead man’s town, but born down in a dead man’s town. He is kicked all his life, from the very first day. The beating takes its toll, and he spends his life accommodating his wounds. The despair is absolute. The transition to the fist-bumping chorus is unmistakably ironic.

“Born down in a dead man’s town” suggests the protagonist is A. Born in a town where not very much happens or B. He is born in a town that is very dangerous to live in.
