Stephin Merritt at his most sardonically ironic: the wind doesn’t need the trees, the trees use the wind to spread pollen. The moon doesn’t need poetry, poets depend on the moon because they need something to write about. In similar fashion, it seems the boy doesn’t need the narrator, the narrator needs the boy. Looks like a tale of unrequited love.

But upon even closer inspection, one realizes the trees don’t even need the wind. They can spread pollen and reproduce through other environmental methods. And poets can write about many topics besides the moon. Although they may be weaker, trees and poets would both survive without the wind and the moon. Likewise, the narrator doesn’t really need the boy. The narrator is just emotionally dependent on him right now, even though he can survive without his beau.

The narrator and the boy don’t need each other, they just happen to rely on one another.

This is the most difficult of the references to place. It could be a reference to Kate Moss, an English supermodel and socialite famous for her controversial private life, high profile relationships, party lifestyle, and drug use. Alternative, it could refer to Kate Winslet, one of Britain’s most successful Hollywood actresses, best known for playing the lead role in Titanic.

This could possibly be a reference to Kate Middleton (officially known as Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge) or Kate Upton, an American model.
