In this context, the fox and snow are symbolic of a lonely person and the apparently cold and empty emotional landscape of the world.

The song documents the conflict that occurred between European settlers in the New World and Native American tribes during the days of colonization and later westward expansion. The song is written from both perspectives, covering the Natives' viewpoint in the first verse and the Europeans' in the rest of the song.

This was Iron Maiden’s first Top 10 hit in the UK. VH1 ranked “Run to the Hills” No. 27 on their list of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs, and No. 14 on their list of the Greatest Hard Rock Songs.

The video of “The Next Day” takes place in a bar called The Decameron. If we follow the reference, we find a masterpiece written by Boccaccio, an Italian author. In this book, a collection of novellas from the 14th century, we can find a lot of imagery that criticizes the Holy Church and its practices.

Also, in the video there are some reference to some saint, like Saint Lucy, a woman whose martyr was being raped by a lot of men and being flagellated for her sins. Saint Lucy decided to tear oneself away her eyes, put them in a silver tray and start walking through the villages exhibiting her eyes.

“Walking on a Dream” is Australian electropop duo Empire of the Sun’s first and most popular single, off their 2008 debut album of the same name.

They told The Sun:

Talking about Walking On A Dream and what it feels like when you’re missing home or you’re missing someone isn’t just ‘it’ — one thing.

Sometimes trying to explain what a song is about spoils the beauty and it rips your heart out painting it black and white.

The mystery is part of the beauty and you kill a song when you tell too much.

Merritt, to his ex-lover: “If you’re going to break my heart, can you at least kiss me before you go?”

“When you betray me, betray me with a kiss,” is also an allusion to Luke 22 of the Bible. While leading the guards who would arrest (and eventually crucify) Jesus, Judas attempts to kiss Jesus. Jesus asks, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” In this line, the speaker alludes to the perceived insincerity of his lover’s kisses and the feeling of his lover “handing him over” to the extreme pain of depression and betrayal.

“Come Back from San Francisco” is a desperate lament from The Magnetic Fields, an art form composer Stephin Merritt frequents.

Shirley Simms sings this track to a man from the point of view of another man. His lover has left New York City for gay mecca San Francisco, and he struggles to realize that his need for his partner isn’t mutual.

The track is built around a folk-rock electric guitar line, with a tone and timbre that could have been plucked from a Lovin' Spoonful or Mamas and the Papas track.
