Jackson explained: “There’s this highway that’s been in existence for forever now – it’s called the Dixie Highway and it runs from north of Michigan all the way down to South Florida, and I wrote a song about it that’s on the album. I grew up on Highway 34 outside of Newnan, Georgia, and that’s where we came up with Thirty Miles West. I think we were about thirty miles west of the official part of the Dixie Highway that runs through Georgia.”

Cape Canaveral in Brevard County, FL is famous for its rocket launch station. Oberst told MTV News:
That song is, I guess, more of nostalgia of watching rocket launches on TV, that kind of thing. I’ve never been to a rocket launch, unfortunately. I’d like to see one though."
The migrants in Orange Groves refers to another critical part of Florida beyond space launches: citrus agriculture largely dependent on undocumented workers. Oberst juxtaposes high technology and working class poverty existing in the same place.

Robin Pecknold chose the Blue Ridge Mountains as the location referenced because, as he told The Daily Mail on February 20, 2009, the references to nature are simply a useful means of expression: “The music was already sounding very rural, so it didn’t make sense to start adding lyrics about receiving emails and watching TV.”

Montségur is a castle located in the Pyrenees mountains in southwest of France. It was considered the “capital” of a religious order, the Cathares.
The Cathares religion is similar to Christianity in many regards, but there some strong differences– the belief in reincarnation being a major one. In the year 1178 the pope tried to convert the Cathares to Christianity, but this led to war.
The Cathares mainly hid in strongholds, among them Montsegur. Following a incredibly long blockade, the Cathares surrendered. But the castle still stands.

“Itchycoo Park” is the nickname of Little Ilford Park in London, where The Small Faces Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane used to visit when they were skipping school.
