When the song first came out, I assumed it meant “pissin” as in “urinating”–a sort of clever, roundabout way to describe spending the night drinking booze. All that liquid’s gotta go somewhere–anyone who’s spent a night knockin' em back in a bar can tell you how much time you suddenly find yourself spending at the urinal

I’m not sure this line is referring to a prostitute at all. A feather boa is just as much a symbol for a diva as it is for a prostitute, and the fact that she would ‘throw [it] in the road’ to set a scene seems more fitting for a diva than a prostitute. It is further supported by the next line; ‘unfittingly dipped into your companions’. If she WAS a prostitute, it would not be unfitting to ‘dip into’ his companions, but if it would be if this is someone he’s in a relationship with, diva or not.

An attention-seeker, she’s not shy of putting on a bit of drama in order to get what she wants. The feather boa suggests she’s a performer, confident in the power she has over men; not necessarily a prostitute in literal terms, but someone who preys on the affections of men, perhaps to satisfy her ego.

When did this become about a prostitute? This is about a girl that Alex/Miles fancies who’s a bit of a drama queen (maybe ‘a bit’ is an understatement) and would do anything to ‘set the scene.’

Decided to sneak off away…

“Sneak off away from your stomach and try your pulse”; ‘Decided to move on from more fickle gut feelings (butterflies in the stomach, as earlier suggested) for the deeper endeavor of capturing a heart, though she’s not interested. She’s pushing but pulling since she’s aware he yearns for her. Only verse in second person.

i think ‘sneak away from you stomach’ means when you have feelings for someone you feel as if your stomach is full with butterflies he wants more than this with this girl so he wants to make her feel excited which this will cause her pulse to pound faster(possibly because of sex)

A sensual image invoking intimate relations, the mention of her “pulse” suggests either nervousness or excitement, or both.

(Note that it’s “they” who are performing the actions, not Alex Turner. Us not knowing who they are, or even how many, suggests that perhaps she doesn’t really know either.)

Lyrics in album booklet read “sneak off away” rather than “sneak up away”

There’s a myriad of possibilities when interpreting an authors meaning in the use of the word “love”. Curtis mentions later in the song “this appeal that we’ve kept through our lives”, and seems as if the idea of their relationship and him being in a committed bond with his wife, is destroying him which in turn draws him further from her.

Important to state that this line is also the clearest reference to Ian’s impending suicide.

It is well known among Joy Division fans that Ian suffered from epilepsy; accumulating multiple seizures within a day towards the end of his life. During a seizure it is not uncommon for an epileptic to bite hard on their tongue due to the jaw locking. I believe Ian is both referring to his marriage and a typical epileptic episode.
