Kris Stephens is a relatively new addition to the Grand Hustle roster, a grammy-nominated songwriter who TIP scooped up after hearing her voice and realizing her talent.

In this song (and especially this verse), Drizzy hit’s up a girl the summer before he released Take Care. He’s explaining to her the reasons why he had to make the moves he has in order to become the independent, well-off individual he is today. And that especially as Take Care builds hype/is released, he will become more independent and prosperous.

Although he’s changed financially, he still wants to confirm that his personality hasn’t changed for the worse, and that this girl will still love him even after the time they have been and will be apart.

He questions why he just “lied” by asking rhetorically “Why am I trying?” because in hindsight he’s so good, he doesn’t have to try at all.

Each verse (especially the first two verses) ends by conveying the fact that Lenny is still waiting for the girl to notice how much he really cares, and that the man for her is only but right in front of her face, just hidden in the darkness of her sorrow. When she breaks free of this sorry, she’ll be able to respond to or notice that he’s “knocking at [her] door” just waiting for mutual feelings or acknowledgement to surface.

The way he ends the song, he makes it sound as though the girl “left ” him when this whole break up transpired, even going on to hint she in fact broke up with him. However, in hindsight, Kravitz is probably just saying that the girl he truly loves is gone at the moment, having been replaced by this mourning girl that’s hiding his real girl. He wants the girl to see him and his love now more than ever so she can snap out of this depressed state and go back to being normal.

What he may feel like doing if he really gets impatient:

But more than likely, he will just continue to wait and hope, as this entire ballad suggests.

The woman needs some time to get all of those retrospective thoughts out of her mind for reflection to get over what once was. After that, she should be able to see the man she’s always known and who has been there for her (Kravitz) is Mr. Right.

This girl gives him “that” unique feeling in his gut, she’s the only woman he’s ever loved this way, and that he would claim as his.

In this bridge, although Lenny’s still waiting for his lover to come around, he transitions the song from trying to comfort her and be essentially just a good friend, to fully and directly confessing his love for this chick and telling her he is the right guy for her.
