Her love isn’t for any man; It’s for the money. Hence, her love is “foreign”; no one can understand it, as only those in her precise position would. Money and the utility she derives from it have her heart more than anything else.

She’s also not used to receiving emotions associated with “real love.” She gets the rawest form of lust or “fake love” from guys that just want the one-nighter, which distorts her idea of what “love” really is.

Ultimately, her chosen lifestyle will leave her alone, and the only thing she’ll be holding is that pole.

This song’s about how popularity of his music has gotten him girls, but he knows they’re only out to get him because he’s the next big thing. There is no love.

In describing this song, Abel told Complex:

That’s an artist’s song. If you’re an artist, you can relate to that record. Especially if you’re in that hip-hop world, “Next” is for you.

In reference to his thoughts about his pending fame around the Trilogy era:

“At the time, I thought I’d be a punk star — grow my hair out, acne on my face, super-fucking-skinny. I was looking at artists like Iggy Pop and the Ramones, or Afropunk. But you evolve and realize your potential. And then it’s like, ‘Fuck yeah. Let’s go.’”

Almost a spiritual successor to the 7th track on House of Balloons, “Coming Down”, “The Fall ” sees Abel discussing a lack of fear for the worst case scenario, since he’s already been through the worst.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Abel specifically cites the hook of this song in discussing his mindset on coming up:

“I have this lyric that goes, ‘I’m not scared of the fall/I’ve felt the ground before.’ And in this industry, I’m not really scared of failing, because I already know what it means to be on the ground.”

This song is about an old girlfriend who did him wrong & she wants him back now that he’s famous.

Juicy J, who handles the outro of this song, is good friends with Abel and featured him on his Stay Trippy banger “One of Those Nights”.

The track serves as the XO anthem, XO referring to The Weeknd’s clique. He’s trying to get his girl to roll with him and indulge in his lifestyle, a pressure that becomes a key theme for the entire project.

“The Host” serves as an interlude for the initiation that Abel’s girl will be faced with in the next track.

This track samples George Frideric Handel’s “Sarabande,” a masterpiece of 17th Century British classical oeuvre.

The opener to Echoes of Silence is The Weeknd’s rendition of Michael Jackson’s classic, “Dirty Diana”, but with an even darker vibe.

Like the original song, Abel experiences the struggles of dealing with groupie love, especially when he’s supposed to already have something going with a girl from the previous projects in the Trilogy.

The Weeknd spoke with L.A. Times about how “Dirty Diana” influenced his artistry:

“Dirty Diana” is my favorite song of all time, it is literally my No. 1. It takes all these genres and it puts it into one song — rock, experimental, hip-hop, R&B. It’s why I wanted to write these dope songs.

In select live performances involving this track, The Weeknd performed a version merging this song with Beauty Behind the Madness single “In the Night.”

A very melancholic yet powerful conclusion to the tape, The Weeknd presents the audience with a piercing question: is the girl the victim of this narrative, or is he?

When Trilogy was released, “Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)” replaced this track as the final Echoes of Silence song.

Wale’s real name is Olubowale, but one other name he goes by is Ralph Folarin. Folarin isn’t his last name, but more of a pen name. From the start Wale used “Ralph” because Folarin sounds like “Lauren”, feeding into an allusion to the revered clothing brand Ralph Lauren.

Abel tried to show love to this girl, almost like a test, and when he did, she could never let go of him. Like the kid’s nursery rhyme “Miss me, miss me, now you gotta kiss me,” she could never let him “miss” an opportunity at intimacy, or “miss” her even when he was having sex with other girls. She needed him.

Nevertheless, Abel reinforces the point that he is not “him,” or “the one” for her. She didn’t have to bring out the gun, nor did she have to roll with Abel and fall in love with him; these, to Abel, are poor decisions on her end. He begged her to get over him, but she couldn’t.

Birds are nomadic, moving from tree to tree and never being able to nest in one place for too long. Similarly, Abel concludes that it’s still time for him to move on.

There’s no warm up to the initiation; the girl already starts off sipping lean and hitting so much weed that she can’t breathe. The craziest part is the girl is new to this, but she isn’t even done; this is just the beginning, as Abel instructs her on how to make more lean and get wasted.

Abel is messed up and probably needs medical attention. The smoke has his eyes bloodshot, characterizing him as both sinful and devilish, but he conceals it to hide the downfalls and vices of the XO lifestyle.

The Weeknd’s clique name, XO, is commonly seen as meaning the combination of the pills ecstasy and oxycontin or, alternatively, of the cognac brand Hennessy XO. The motto “XO ‘Till We Overdose” or XOTWOD was derived from this symbolism, and it’s a pledge this girl will have to actively take throughout the initiation.
