Andre is disappointed with the direction that hip-hop has taken since first entering the game over 20 years ago.

He feels like back then artists actually wrote their verses, but many current artists cheapen their music with the use of ghostwriters. 3 Stacks' OutKast partner, Big Boi, expressed similar sentiments on “Follow Us.”

Andre admitted in 2012 that “most rappers don’t even write their own raps,” before saying it was “Ok, cause we love their albums.”

This was initially speculated to be a shot at Drake, whom Andre has collaborated with before. Drake got into a high profile beef with Meek Mill in 2015 after Meek exposed Drake’s use of ghostwriters.

However, Andre’s close friend CeeLo Green later stated in an interview that Andre actually wrote the verse in 2014 and that it is not a Drake diss, but rather a general statement:

Stacks killing ‘em right now! He was telling me that he did that verse like two years ago. […] I can confirm that it’s not [about Drake], but it’s good for Hip-Hop.

MadeinTYO compares his chains to the chains Pharrell Williams (aka Skateboard P) wears. Pharrell was once known for wearing eye-popping jewelry, like his chains in the “Mr. Me Too” music video. However, in 2014, P reflected on his younger days telling GQ, “The money was too loud. The success was too much…The jewelry was too shiny.”

Skateboard P is also close with Nigo, who was referenced earlier in the hook.

After spending most of his career signed to large record companies, Nas finally started his own label—Mass Appeal Records, in 2014. He presumably started the label to increase his revenue share.

Mass Appeal has already put out critically acclaimed projects like RTJ2, signed up and comers like Dave East, and released cult hits like “Old English.”

Nas helped popularize the fade – where his hair starts thick and gradually gets lighter, in the early 1990s.

Many rappers and athletes have recently incorporated the fade into their hairstyle, including The Game and Damian Lillard.

The Bevel Shave System and Bevel Trimmer are two products made by Walker & Company Brands, a black-owned shaving company founded by Queens native Tristan Walker.

He founded the Bevel products to cater to the shaving needs of people with coarse and curly hair. Nas is a Bevel brand ambassador and investor.

This line speaks directly to the lyric in the song where Nas urges the black community to support and found companies that support its needs.

Nas' debut album, Illmatic is widely considered the most influential rap album ever made. Here, Nas points out just one point of Illmatic’s influence—its cover art.

Ever since Nas put a picture of himself as a child on the cover of Illmatic, many rappers have copied him. The most notable examples are Biggie, Lil Wayne, and Drake, to which all were alluded in Lupe Fiasco’s hook in “Adoration of the Magi”.

Through his actions, Nas has helped push hip-hop forward and legitimize the genre. In-fact, Harvard even has a musical fellowship named after him.

The album cover features DJ khaled’s baby, which is reminiscent of Nas saying that he started this trend stated on Khaled’s track
