John Lennon’s answer to those who looked for hidden meanings in The Beatles' music was “Glass Onion”, a song deliberately filled with red herrings, obscure imagery and allusions to past works.

Fully aware of the power of The Beatles' own mythology, and with a general dislike of those who over-interpreted his work, Lennon deliberately inserted references to “I Am The Walrus”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Lady Madonna”, “The Fool On The Hill” and “Fixing A Hole”.

The effect is a kaleidoscopic look through the group’s back pages. “Lady Madonna”, whose protagonist reappears in “Glass Onion”, contained a reference to “I Am The Walrus” (“See how they run”).

That song, in turn, featured the line “See how they fly like Lucy in the sky”, a clear reference to Sgt. Pepper’s psychedelic masterpiece. The effect is of a continual strand running through The Beatles' works, even if such a strand was never intended in the first place.

Lennon: That’s me, just doing a throwaway song, à la ‘Walrus,’ à la everything I’ve ever written. I threw the line in – ‘the Walrus was Paul’ – just to confuse everybody a bit more. And I thought Walrus has now become me, meaning ‘I am the one.’ Only it didn’t mean that in this song.

In keeping with the other Harrison songs of this era, “Think For Yourself” is a partly-political, partly-philosophical rant against politicians and other people who try to keep people from setting their goals too high. He proposes that we should think however we want and that to expand your mind to greater possibilities is the way forward.

“Think For Yourself” was recorded in a single session on November 8th, 1965, under the working title “Won’t Be There With You”.

The Beatles recorded the basic track – rhythm guitars, bass and drums – in a single take. They then overdubbed lead guitar, more bass (this time fed through a fuzz box), tambourine, maracas and organ, along with two three-part vocal tracks.

Paul used a fuzz box on the bass on Think For Yourself. When Phil Spector was making Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, the engineer who’s set up the track overloaded the microphone on the guitar player and it became very distorted. Phil Spector said, ‘Leave it like that, it’s great’. Some years later everyone started to try to copy that sound and so they invented the fuzz box. We had one and tried the bass through it and it sounded really good.

Prior to the recording, George Martin taped the group rehearsing the song. The Beatles were aware of this, deliberately playing up to the microphones.

The recording went mostly unused, although a six-second segment of the group practising their harmonies found its way into the Yellow Submarine film, when The Beatles were called upon to revive the mayor of Pepperland.

The second single from Arctic Monkeys' debut album is about prostitution around the studio they were recording in in Sheffield. It was a considerable commercial success, scoring the band their second UK #1 single after “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” earlier that year.

The music video is the most literal they’ve done – a far cry from the videos they did with Richard Ayoade.
