A clever play on words with ‘alienation’, the feeling of isolation, and ‘alien nation’, a description of America’s surrounding of UFO pop culture. It sees Billie Joe separating his affections to his home country after realizing how much it has changed post 9/11.
The line also plays on the idea that the United States of America is a nation of immigrants (aliens) and that the nation is run by people who are like aliens to the citizens; i.e. they think different and care about other things.
I kept hearing it as Aryan nation giving me a different meaning
I always thought it was “aryan nation” which relates to the “redneck agenda” and American imperialism the song criticises, it also ties into the message in Holiday later in the album.

The ‘alienation’ could be to the ones trying to spread the truth but inevitably something happens. An example of this would be the conspiracy theories around the Assassination of MLK. If this is true it could be an explanation of why so many people follow suite and don’t speak out.

In modern society, many descendants of immigrants are denying rights to immigrants. This line shows that we are a nation made up of immigrants and that many people are being hypocritical in saying that we should ban immigrants, when most Americans are actually immigrants.
