Though he failed this love interest and is angry at himself for his failure, he feels as if in the future he will mature and age well enough to possibly be ready to be with her.
Mumford & Sons' music is enchantingly full of allusions, and I think this might be an allusion to Dylan Thomas' famous 1951 poem “Do not go gentle into that good night"—a work reflecting on living boldly and not passively accepting death, even if you aren’t afraid of it. The first, most famous, stanza reads as follows:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
The reason I think it is an allusion is the “I rage and I rage” line, especially, although the other language in these few lines matches up as well. The “rage, rage against the dying of the light,” line is famous enough to invoke here, along with the meaning of the whole poem. If this song is directed toward God, this allusion would make the meaning of these lines more specific, relating to death, not only accepting God. However, it’s possible that I’m completely interpolating this allusion into the text.

The second verse expresses regret from the singer, admitting to raging and not being in line with God after the happenings in the first verse where he felt abandoned by God. As well as blaming this on his young mind and saying that when he’s older he might become ready to understand and accept God more.
He is talking to God not a person..
