Stromae écrit comme un bourgeois qui ne se sent pas concerné avec les paroles d'une chanson, seulment le beat. Pendant le ligne toute entière, il se moque d'eux.

L.A., hometown of Jay Rock is known for the massive amounts of violence that erupt from it’s streets, therefore giving him the liberty to call it the City of Satan, Satan being the master of evil. The city’s so violent, that angels, God’s own agents of peace and love can’t even learn to like each other.

Also, on an ironic note, Jay Rock’s calling Los Ángeles (The Angels in Spanish) the City of Satan. What a change the city must have gone through in it’s life for people to come to this conclusion.

This line also has biblical undertones since Satan, or Lucifer, in religious contexts is considered to be a fallen angel.

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning…For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’”
- Isaiah 14

Stromae is alluding back to this line. Note that this time, it’s not you/I/my, it’s they/we/our. Stromae is talking about everyone who has absent fathers.

  • bouffer ses doigts – (lit. “to bite one’s fingers”) has a figurative meaning “to hold regret”. But ever the word wizard, Stromae is also using this idiom to reference another hand-related expression from before.

Stromae uses clever wordplay with bouffer ses doigts because here, both its figurative and literal meaning would make sense, lending the line to several different interpretations:

  • Stromae may again be referring to hide-and-seek. The child is counting down on his fingers, but after waiting so long, he runs out of fingers to count on (as if they’ve been bitten off).
  • Nail biting is a compulsive habit associated with nervousness. The child has been nervously waiting his father’s arrival for years. There comes a point when biting your nails wears them down to nothing and eventually you’re just biting on your naked finger …

  • sucer son pouce – (lit. “to suck one’s thumb”) a Belgian expression meaning “to guess” or “to make sth up”. The idiom about sucking your thumb goes along with the baby theme of the song.

Stromae believes that the theoretical Mr. Know-It-All didn’t even learn how to be a successful father; he inherited how to be a father from his own father.

That means that Stromae, who has never known his father and therefore cannot inherit his father’s fathering skills, is condemned by such a theory to have a bad relationship with his own children.

Irresponsible people give birth to babies but who gives birth to irresponsible people?

The irresponsible people are fathers who abandon their children.

Stromae examines the reasons that lead a father to abandon his offspring.

Stromae wonders about the kind of father he will be: an average parent whose relationship with his children is remote to non-existent (therefore just passing along genes) or a genius, as in an exemplary father?
