Jonathan Papelbon is considered by many fans to be a washed-up, arrogant, overpaid relief pitcher whose talent isn’t where it used to be. From 2006 to 2009, Papelbon was one of the best closers in the game. Now in 2014 after all the criticisms, he’s having hands down his best year since 2009. Yet all anyone can talk about is his bad contract.

An ERA of 1.54, a WHIP of 0.823, and saving 33 games in 36 opportunities.

Maybe it’s things like the picture above that make people underrate him.

He’s a fourth outfielder for Kansas City, but man, he’s a good fourth outfielder. The main tool of Dyson is his speed. His speed brings him help in outfield defense but has also made his stolen base prowess a true weapon. In his career, he has a 86% stealing percentage. He’s sixth in baseball with 33 stolen bases. Now in 2014, he’s added hitting to his skills as he’s hitting .288 so far.

McGee started the year as Tampa’s setup man and quickly became a legitimate candidate as the best setup man in baseball. He wasn’t selected for the All-Star team however and didn’t even make the final vote.

Towards the end of the season, he finds himself getting more chances as a closer. His stats at September 5th are an ERA of 1.27, a WHIP of 0.859, an 3.1 Wins Above Replacement for you WAR fans.

A 23-year-old outfielder who plays great defense, a top notch throwing arm, and has power. What’s not to like?

Joey Bats has been one of the best players in baseball since 2010 and everyone in the baseball world knows it.

So how can he be underrated?

His 2014 season has been that good. Turn on the TV or listen to the radio, and the MVP talks seem to forget Bautista. He’s been the leader on a Blue Jay sqaud that’s been competing for the post season all season long.

If that’s not enough, there’s numbers to back up his MVP case. As of September 5th, he has 30 homers, 86 walks versus 86 strikeouts, and a .397 OBP.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been making a strong case for the postseason in 2014. This came as a shock to a lot of fans, but many people knew some of the studs they have on their team like Gomez and Braun. Looking at their lineup more, the talented names keep coming and coming…until you get to Khris Davis.

The 26-year-old outfielder has been just as productive as many of his Brew Crew teammates. He leads his team in homers. He’s hit 20+ homers in a year where power is way down. His 58 extra-base hits are 12th in all of baseball.

This catch robbed a home run to end the inning, preventing a huge inning for Boston. Reminds me a bit of Coco Crisp, except Calhoun didn’t completely fall over and, well, actually caught it.

This has to be one of the biggest home runs in all of 2014. With two outs and the Rockies trailing by two runs, Drew Stubbs was an unlikely tying run up at the plate.

In a very disappointing season for the Rockies, Stubbs was able to give them one of the biggest homers of the year. In 2014, Stubbs has found some success in Colorado, hitting a career high and lowering that K rate.
