In the 1990s, the Beastie Boys made the Free Tibet movement a cause célèbre, to the extent that a strong association between the Beasties and the Dalai Lama lasted for the remainder of the band’s career.

On the set of a photo shoot, a member of the Insane Clown Posse’s publicity group Nasty Little Man approached Violent J and explained that this lyric needed to be changed.

Insulted, Violent J exclaimed that his music would not be censored again, referring to Disney’s previous requirement for censorship on The Great Milenko album under the Disney owned record label, Island Records.

Nasty Little Man told Violent J that the Beastie Boys were not only clients of the company but also personal friends, and that the Beastie Boys told the company to make Violent J change the lyric. In response, Violent J fired Nasty Little Man and asked its team to leave the photo shoot:

So when Nasty Little Man, or whoever they were, the record company was really proud that they got Nasty Little Man to take us. And then they wanted us to fucking change our lyrics for a publicity company! Or a publicist, or whatever it is. And we were like, “Fuck that! That’s our picture we’re painting there. We’re not going to change it because they got the Beastie Boys on their label. Fuck that, that’s our art, man!”
