Unlike Napoleon Bonaparte, who certainly did not feel as though he won after losing the Battle of Waterloo (he was exiled to St. Helena, where he died in 1821), this singer doesn’t mind “losing” because the result is that she is now with her lover.

As an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon language and English literature, suffice to say Tolkien was extremely gifted with writing in the English language. He furthermore invented several languages for his legendarium, most notably Elvish languages such as Quenya.

George R.R. Martin is a talented author in his own right, but his prose is undeniably less sophisticated. Similarly, he hasn’t invented any complete languages for the Song of Ice and Fire universe – for instance Dothraki and Valyrian were developed by David J. Peterson, not Martin.

Dungaree is generally the heavy cloth used to make jeans (and so can refer to jeans in general).

However in popular usage the term refers specifically to jean overalls. Dungaree overalls were popularized in the 1990s by a variety of rappers, most notably 2Pac – for instance Biggie referred to dungarees in order to throw a subliminal shot at Pac

Heater of course refers to a gun Jay is keeping on his person, to protect himself from the aforementioned dangers of the hood.

Tolkien rebuts Martin’s claim of being rock and roll with rock band Led Zeppelin – who were fans of Lord of the Rings and had several songs inspired by the series, including “Misty Mountain Hop,” “Ramble On,” “The Battle of Evermore,” and perhaps “Over the Hills and Far Away,” and “Stairway to Heaven.”

The drums play a characteristic Led Zeppelin drum lick – sometimes nicknamed the “Bonham grooves” – during this line.

The Silmarillion is a collection of myths written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published by his son, Christopher, which delve into the Lord of the Rings universe (providing from the creation of the universe to the end of the First Age).

More generally, this alludes to the fact that the eponymous silmarils are priceless jewels (with most of the overarching narrative of The Silmarillion being a contest for them). Tolkien’s work is similarly priceless for his descendants, since the intellectual property is so valuable.

The Beastie Boys' way of indicating everywhere – from somewhere close (White Castle being a popular hamburger restaurant franchise) to somewhere exotic and far (the Nile River in Egypt)

This line is similar to one in “Intergalactic,” which uses the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey instead of White Castle.

Alexander the Great is one of the most famous and successful military commanders of all time, conquering the Persian Empire and creating a Macedonian Empire which stretched from Greece to India.

On a basic level, Saba and Chance are proud of their city, so they claim it is great much like Alexander was.

This also works on another level though, since Alexander founded many cities and named them after himself (the most famous being Alexandria, Egypt). So Saba and Chance might see themselves as similarly leaving their imprint on Chicago in a way which will survive the test of time (similar to how Frank Sinatra in New York City or 2Pac in Los Angeles left an indelible influence on their respective cities which has outlasted them).

Contradicting the message Sinatra gives throughout the song, if his collapse in May continues through to July rather than picking back up in June, then he states he won’t have the will to continue

However given all the preceding lines, one gets the sense that Sinatra would recover even from that extended duration of failure (obviously the months metaphorically encompass far broader periods of time)

Success breeds jealousy, so bitter people celebrate the failure of others

As DMC puts it on Biggie’s song “My Downfall:”

That’s not all, MC’s have the gall
To pray and pray for my downfall
Pray and pray for my downfall
Pray and pray for my downfall
