Having written Liz off at this point, Lil Dicky returns to an ill-advised drunken mainstay: texting his ex-girlfriend.

She already knows that he isn’t over her, so when Lil Dicky wakes up and looks at his texts from the night before, he will almost certainly regret sending that.

Lil Dicky is not connected to the traditional lineage of hip hop in the same way that Snoop Dogg is.

Whereas hip hop originated in black urban communities with influences from funk, soul, jazz, reggae, etc., as an affluent suburbanite Lil Dicky was exposed to hip hop as a internationally successful commercial phenomenon.

He views this as an advantage: he is not constrained by the traditional truisms of the form which to some extent confine even the most innovative rappers who emerged from that paradigm.

Since the concern about being “authentic” in the traditional sense in hip hop is nil to him, he can rap about issues which are germane to him.

Lil Dicky also happens to be a member of a very wealthy and influential demographic (upper middle class white suburbanites). So if his tactic works, he has enormous potential for commercial success.

The high-pitched vocals in the outro were sung by Michael himself, as an isolated pitch-shifted vocal demonstrates:

This section of the song was later prominently sampled by Kanye West on his hit single “Good Life”

Anderson starts by describing his car – a classic muscle car, leather suede interior and candy paint (a high gloss paint), and a wood grain steering wheel (and perhaps dashboard). The result would be a quintessential pimp car, such as the one described by Pimp C on “Big Pimpin'”

However by the end of Anderson’s description, his words are doing double duty – “gripping wood” can mean he is holding the steering wheel and/or gear lever, or alternatively it could mean that he is holding his erection – meaning that his girl asking if her friend can “ride” can refer to either a joyride in his car, or a threesome

Lil Dicky is debating whether it’s still worth it to go out tonight.

It’s already basically 12:30am, the music stops at 1:30am, and the bar closes at 2am. That gives him about an hour (less the time of the Lyft drive) to enjoy the bar, provided there is no line to get in.

Typically when you start debating the logistics so carefully, you are disinclined to go out and are looking for a pretext. So this interlude portends the conclusion of the song.
