This is a very old English phrase (see e.g. this example from 1837, or this example from 1872), but it was popularized in this instance by Elvis – although this song was written by Carl Perkins the year prior, in 1955.

The precise meaning of the phrase is disputed, but it is generally agreed that it alludes to the first place winner of a horse race receiving the prize money, and the race being an entertaining spectacle.

Frank addresses the ongoing clamour since the 2012 release of channel ORANGE by stating that he will release his music when he feels like it, irrespective of external pressures.

In 2009 Frank joined the musical collective Odd Future and signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings.

It took Frank a bit more time to become successful, starting with his 2011 mixtape nostalgia, ULTRA, but in 2009 he was able to stop having a “day job” and focus on his musical career in earnest. Thus from then on he hasn’t needed to worry about financial needs as much, and can spend more time focusing on ensuring that he creates top quality music.
