As the onlookers grew quiet, the madman realizes that it is not the right time to speak such truths about god to the citizens. The irony here is what he says makes the citizens believe he is a madman when in reality it’s vice-versa. He shatters the lantern on the ground which symbolizes himself no longer needing guidance or truths from a god that was murdered by the will of mankind. He then proposes that it will take some time for others to follow suit and figure it out for themselves as he has.
Also, the time that it takes light to travel from the nearest star to earth is roughly 4.2 years at the speed of light. The madman uses the parallels time and light to say “we know not of what we do”. Some that search for the truth may never find it but when the time comes only then will they see the light.
