I think this song is at least partially about el-p the head of def jux. This is the first song he released after def jux went under and he hasn’t worked with el p since. Especially the line where he says you ain’t a leader among you’re a bottom feeder eating his young.

I agree with Patrick Quinn. I don’t think this song is about his divorce at all. I always assumed it was about the split between Aes and El-P after Def Jux dissolved. It’s no secret that they collaborated a lot for years – and then never again. They don’t even follow each other on Twitter. Cage (happens to be in the video for this song) has publicly stated he resented the way El-P handled Def Jux going under – not being entirely truthful to the artists who were working on albums for the label. The Asimov reference to me hints at El-P, a huge sci-fi lit fan. And PQ’s comment about “you ain’t a leader among” is spot-on. El was the leader of Def Jux. Plus we know that a lot of beef went down with El-P after Camu Tao died, as evidenced by Vast Aire’s ramblings. Sorry folks but I doubt this song is about Aesop’s divorce at all.

Also good to note that in the music video, Aes is still wearing his wedding ring… Which seems like something you maybe wouldn’t do if you were trying to trash your ex spouse.

Punching clocks refers to working a 9 to 5 job where you have a slip of paper that a machine ‘punches’ the time and date into. You use this when you arrive, when you leave for lunch, when you return from lunch, and when you leave.

Atmosphere is doing something much better than that, as shown by the allusion to Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story”.

The 6th plague was of “boils or disease”. The word “plague” itself is synonymous with disease. A big theme in this verse.

An Act of God or Vis Major. A legal term or principle that is used to limit liability in cases of lack of ability to perform in terms of a contract or obligation in law. Pandemics have been termed Acts of God and as such, the legal concept has been used in legislation of states of emergency or disaster to justify the closure or lockdown of a state or country to deal with a pandemic or viral outbreak. Again a major theme in Aesop’s verse in this song. The mechanism reminds me of El-P’s line in the Company Flow song, Population Control, where he says “We answer to no one, We’re 911”. Basically a state of emergency instituted on the basis on Vis Major / Act of God (i.e. pandemic), where even emergency hotlines are not working due to the implementation of a full scale lockdown.
